What exactly is Interior Design? You've heard the term, but maybe are not sure all that this label covers.

Interior Design is the conceptual planning of a human environment that works both aesthetically and technically to achieve the desired result set by either the client, designer, or both.

So in plain english, Interior Design is the process of making an interior space look great for the client, as well as providing the best possible functionality for this space.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics put it this way:

It is "practical, aesthetic and conducive to intended purposes, such as raising productivity, selling merchandise, or improving life style."

Interior Design Career

An interior design career offers a working environment that requires both creative and technical skills. An interior designer works with clients to coordinate space planning and layout, furniture selection and arrangement, and material and color coordination. Designers can work for architectural firms, interior design firms, retail furniture stores, and building contractors, but they are not limited to these specific employers. You can choose to build your career in interior design by working in one of the following areas: residential design or commercial design.

Residential designers work with clients to help design and coordinate their homes. Most commonly, designers work directly with the homeowner throughout this process. A homeowner can hire a designer or work with an architect or building contractor to manage the design from the onset of the project. Some clients hire a designer to redesign a pre-existing space in their home.

Commercial designers work with all different types of businesses to design their offices, retail spaces or public facilities. This can include medical offices, business offices, restaurants, libraries and store interiors to name a few. Designers sometimes work with a small group that is in charge of decision-making or they may work directly with the business owner to coordinate the design of the space.

Interior designers can focus on one specific type of design such as kitchen and cabinet design, or they can be very broad in their scope offering both residential and commercial design skills. Whether you decide to focus in one area or encompass many different types of design, the ability to communicate well with your clients is just as important as an education to build your design skills in this industry. Check out the Interior Design Schools and colleges that offer interior design degrees and certificates. It's one of the first steps needed in getting that interior design career of your dreams.
